Through and through freedom and Schopenhauer Essay Through and through freedom is considered as being able to pick a game-plan exclusively dependent on one’s character. Immanuel Kant contends that people have choice and act as needs be, while Arthur Shopenhauer proposes that people are hallucinating and want to have through and through freedom, yet they are lead by laws of nature and thought processes as it were. Seeing ourselves as acting with through and through freedom is simply to fulfill the otherworldly necessity on being liable for ones activity. Through and through freedom is a marvel that doesn't exist; what is seen to be unrestrained choice is causes that we follow up on and thought processes that drive us to do as such. Each and every activity needs a reason to follow up on. .Kant interfaces through and through freedom with ethical quality and infers that profound quality exists in reason. He doesn't generally clarify through and through freedom however just disproves protests against it by expressing that we are free by realizing we have obligations. His contention recommends that despite the fact that we have ethics we can generally act shamelessly, by being able to act else we have unrestrained choice. Shopenhauer’s water model demonstrates in any case. â€Å"This is actually as though water addressed itself: â€Å"I can make high waves (yes in the ocean during a tempest), I can surge down slope (yes! in the stream bed), I can plunge down frothing and spouting (yes! In the cascade), I can rise unreservedly as a flood of water noticeable all around (yes! In the wellspring) I can, at last, dissipate and vanish (yes! At a specific temperature); however I am willfully staying calm and clear in the reflecting lake. † This model is deterministic and demonstrates that all together for the water to do every one of those things, it needs a reason to follow up on. Similarly as a man must have a reason that pushes him forward so as to act in like manner. The man needs a rationale that will go about as a reason. The causal determinism suggests that every single future occasion are required by over a wide span of time occasions joined by laws of nature. It's anything but a man’s choice that makes him act ethically, but instead, the intentions make him act in a specific manner. Kant would contend that acting ethically has supreme worth on the grounds that by acting ethically, we take part in a higher request of presence. Schopenhauer gives the case of a man who gets out from work and assesses his choices which he wants to uninhibitedly browse. That man chooses to return home to his better half. He thinks he settled on this decision openly however it is on the grounds that the intention of returning home was more noteworthy than different choices. If Schopenhauer somehow happened to provoke him to state ‘that was anticipated from you being the exhausting man that you are’, and he went to the performance center with him rather, this would in any case not mean he has through and through freedom. It just implies that his intentions have changed in light of the fact that there is an alternate reason. Schopenhauer’s remark makes him act resisting way. On the off chance that this man had a progressively aloof character, he may have still returned home to his better half. Causes would have influenced him in various manners and he would have had various thought processes. Being mindful of our activities is requested from us by the general public; when we act likewise it is on the grounds that the society’s desires cause us to act dependably. Kant contends that as reasonable creatures, we ought to intentionally and unreservedly pick the capable activity since it is the laws we decide to comply with that make us free. Schopenhauer would contend that the main explanation we obey rules and act dependably is on the grounds that our thought processes drive us to that bearing. In the event that our thought processes were to struggle with the guidelines, we would quit being dependable. In the event that men really had choice that drives them to act capably, we would not have the option to clarify murder, robbery or any illicit activity that hurts the general public. At the point when the killer, the cheat or the criminal play out their activities, it is on the grounds that their thought processes are clashing with the guidelines society set. People are dependent upon law of nature, without a reason, there is no impact; in this way we have no unrestrained choice. As indicated by Kant, one should go about as though the adage of one’s activity were to turn into, an all inclusive law of nature through one’s will. By expressing that, Kant is really making the law of nature subject to human through and through freedom, putting the impact before the reason. Schopenhauer presents a contention which clarifies why man are dependent upon law of nature: â€Å"For man, similar to all objects of understanding, is a marvel in existence, and since the law of causality holds for all such from the earlier and subsequently regardless, he too should be a dependent upon it. † This recommends we are encountering indistinguishable causalities from each other being does, yet we are heedless to perceive what is self-evident. There are such a large number of causes that influence men, which is the reason we get preposterous while perceiving the causes. Both Kant and Schopenhauer utilize the billiard balls guide to outline the connection among circumstances and logical results. Kant expresses that we dislike billiard balls since we can settle on our own decisions as balanced creatures. Though Schopenhauer recommends that we resemble the more intricate adaptation of the billiard balls: we will possibly move on the off chance that we are hit. We vary from billiard balls not on the grounds that we have reason, but since we are so continually hit that we quit seeing the causes. Each and every segment in life cause our intentions to shape in specific manners which is the reason it is so difficult to perceive the causes we follow up on. Every one of our activities can be decreased to thought processes we have so as to fulfill our definitive reason: to live and to make life. In the end we are ranned by straightforward thought processes, for example, keeping up our progressive congruity of presence, proliferation or assurance. Indeed, even a man who is going to end it all will pull his hand away in the event that he incidentally contacts a hot iron. His reflex will impart quicker signs to his mind before he can even recognize it. He would have no through and through freedom over that activity; it would simply be him complying with the law of nature without considering it. As subjects to law of nature, the choices we make in our day by day lives are for the most part brought about by the intentions to locate the most ideal mate to make the best off spring. We don't really remember it, yet even the most inconsequential decisions we make, similar to the longing to drive an extravagant vehicle over a less expensive one, isn't a demonstration of through and through freedom. Thusly, much the same as a peacock indicating his quills, we are unknowingly lead by thought processes that drive us into a specific heading which will make us progressively alluring as a mate. We need to be acknowledged by the general public for similar reasons, being a piece of a network gives a security and chance to duplicate. The motivation behind why a rich man would support poor people, or join a nation club isn't on the grounds that he has unrestrained choice that makes him ethically capable, or that he appreciates playing golf, yet it is on the grounds that that will make him increasingly regarded and better acknowledged by the general public which he needs to have a place. Our reflexes, hormones, neurons, our DNA and the causes that follow up on us condition the choices we make. We decide to accept that we have unrestrained choice since it causes us to feel as though we have control on our life. As the researcher Lynn Margulis characterizes â€Å"Life is the bizarre product of people developed by advantageous interaction. Swimming, conjugating, dealing and overwhelming, microscopic organisms living in close relationship during the Proterozoic offered ascend to horde figments, blended creatures, of which we speak to a minuscule portion of a growing offspring. Through mortal mergers unique creatures developed meiotic sex, modified passing, and complex multicellularity. Life is an augmentation of being into the people to come, the following species. † Nothing makes us any not quite the same as the microbes, other than being progressively unpredictable, that exclusively followed up on their impulses. The main contrast is the condition that decides our activities have numerous factors, while it was many less in prokaryotes. On the off chance that we can comprehend that the least difficult types of life were following up on the essential thought processes and no through and through freedom, we ought to have the option to see that our activities are not unique. The compound circulation of our DNA will make us have an embodiment, which will decide our thought processes and activities under various conditions. As the being gets progressively perplexing, the circumstances and logical results connection will be more earnestly to watch yet at the same time, there won't be through and through freedom.

Free Essays on Abandonment Of The Jews

The Abandonment of the Jews By David S. Wyman â€Å"To slaughter the Jews, the Nazis were happy to debilitate their ability to battle the war. On the off chance that we would have placed half as much vitality into cherishing the Jews as Hitler spent loathing the Jews we could have had an extraordinary effect. The film Citizen Kane by Orson Welles Essay The film Citizen Kane by Orson Welles, opens with an image of a mansion with a window that has a light turned on. As the establishments change into a closer perspective on the mansion, at that point a perspective on the stronghold from the impression of the water encompassing it, we are brought into the window as a man falls dead with the final words Rosebud originating from his mouth. We are then brought through a labyrinth of scenes that reflect one keeps an eye on venture through life from his youth with a damaging dad, to the time he acquires the universes 6th biggest fortune. We will compose a custom exposition on The film Citizen Kane by Orson Welles explicitly for you for just $16.38 $13.9/page Request now Charles Foster Kane, is depicted in the film as a man who has all that one would ever need. Whatever he doesnt posess, he attempts to purchase. Influence and riches to Kane are the epitamy of progress, and despite the fact that he asserts or atleast attempts to be upbeat, he really is certainly not a cheerful individual. As Kane discovers that the things he needs most in life he can't buy, so to do the individuals with whom he encircle himself with. When Kane ran for representative, he attempts to utilize his riches to overwhelm his rival, Gettys. This reverse discharges on Kane when Gettys takes steps to utilize data about an undertaking Kane needed to obstruct him from the race. Kane once portrayed his better half as a cross area of the American open. These kind of references furnish us with a picture of a man that is eager to effectively depict himself as adoring or ready to be cherished. Kane was genuinely always unable to adore somebody. He was given all that he at any point needed, and when he couldnt purchase something, he attempted to make it. When Susan Alexander, Kanes second spouse, needed to be a vocalist, Kane got her an instructor, and started from that point, to make an artist. He constructed an Opera house and made her into a glamourous star. All through the film, Kane utilized his paper, the Enquirer to control the psyches of the general population into accepting whatever Kane composed. Kane additionally utilized his paper to show the open how legislators Gettys were degenerate and deceptive. Regardless of whether the realities distributed in the Enquirer were valid or not, to Kane was irrelevent. Kane was just keen on advancing himself by reviling individuals, however by composing articles that had no reason to them other than to delight himself. All through the film, we see that rosebud is played up to have some significant hugeness in Kanes life. Rosebud is certainly a shrewd prop that Welles uses to take the film on its excursion. By sorting out his youth and more established a very long time into this shrewd exhibit of direct records of encounters individuals have had with him, we are given an insiders perspective on a not all that known man. The rosebud is illustrative of a real existence unfulfilled. The consuming sled speaks to that of an adolescent who came up short on the fun loving nature and love of a dad and mother. I believe that the rosebud was to a greater degree an approach to show how Kane experienced his adolescence, and associate it to his failure to be a cheerful man. Resident Kane permits individuals to perceive what it resembles when somebody has everything materiel, except cant appear to discover joy. I feel that this film is critical in saying that influence and riches can't gather the things that which we have to endure. Kane never was genuinely cherished, and couldn't adore. He never knew any of these things since he was constantly offered things to make him cheerful or to purchase his affection. Kane would never purchase the one thing that he made a decent attempt to accomplish, joy.

Noun-Adjective Agreement in Spanish

Noun-adjective agreement is one of the most fundamental aspects of Spanish grammar: Adjectives must agree with the nouns they refer to in both number and gender. Agreement: an Essential, Basic Rule of Spanish Grammar The rule, which has no English equivalent, is that singular nouns are accompanied by singular adjectives, and plural nouns are accompanied by plural adjectives. Masculine nouns are described or limited by masculine adjectives, and feminine nouns are described or limited by feminine adjectives. The same rule applies to definite articles (the equivalent of the) and indefinite articles (a class of words that in English include a, an, and any), both of which sometimes are considered types of adjectiveshttps://www.thoughtco.com/noun-adjective-agreement-3078114. How To Modify Adjectives for Number and Gender The normal form of adjectives, the form you will find listed in dictionaries, is singular and masculine. To make the adjective plural, follow one of these steps, which as the same as for making nouns plural: If it ends in an unstressed vowel, add -s. Examples: verde (green, singular), verdes (green, plural). El à ¡rbol es verde, the tree is green. Los à ¡rboles son verdes, the trees are green. If it ends in a z, change the z to a c and add -es. Example: feliz (happy, singular), felices (happy, plural). Soy feliz, Im a happy person; somos felices, we are happy people. If it ends in another consonant or a stressed vowel, add -es. Example: difà cil (difficult, singular), difà ciles (difficult, plural). La tarea es difà cil, the task is difficult; las tareas son difà ciles, the tasks are difficult.Note that in a few cases it is necessary to add an accent mark to maintain the stress on the correct syllable or delete one when its no longer necessary to indicate stress. For example, the plural of inglà ©s (English) as an adjective is ingleses. Making a masculine adjective feminine is even easier. Just follow these steps: If the singular masculine adjective ends in an -o, change it to an -a. Example: pequeà ±o (small, masculine singular), pequeà ±a (small, feminine singular). El gato es pequeà ±o, the cat is small; los gatos son pequeà ±os, the cats are small; la chica es pequeà ±a, the girl is small; las chicas son pequeà ±as, the girls are small. If the singular masculine adjective ends in any other letter, the feminine form is the same. El autobà ºs es grande, the bus is big; la casa es grande, the house is big. Adjectives can come before or after nouns, or they can be used with verbs such as ser (to be) to describe nouns. But (except for invariable adjectives) they will always match the nouns they describe in both number and gender. Invariable Adjectives There are a few adjectives, known as invariable adjectives, that dont change in form. Most of them are either uncommon colors or words of foreign origin. An example is web as in la pà ¡gina web (the web page) and las pà ¡ginas web (the web pages). Sometimes a noun can be used as an invariable adjective, but this practice is much less common in Spanish than in English. Being Spanish students seldom will have the need to use invariable adjectives, but you should be aware that they exist so they dont confuse you when you see them. Economic Costs A Study - 650 Words

1. Economic costs are those associated with economic activity. These costs are those that the company incurs in the production of a good or service. They can be described in a number of different ways, including fixed costs, variable costs, direct costs and indirect costs. Fixed and variable costs are both part of total costs, which often comes into play when firms set prices, for example. Another economic cost is the marginal cost, which is the addition unit produced for each additional investment. Another key about economic costs is that they can include opportunity costs. This stands in contrast to something like financial accounting, but is acceptable when considering the economics of something because the company always faces a choice about the decisions that it makes. In microeconomic theory, these choices do often relate to factor inputs or other attributes that can be described in terms of their economic costs. The concept to of economic costs is also important because it helps the firm to understand its own cost structure, by breaking down the different constituent parts of the cost. Thus, for most companies there is fairly extensive analysis of the underlying cost structure, and economic cots will often come into that analysis. 2. Scalable Cloud Infrastructure Architecture for Distributed Simulation

Question: Discuss about the Scalable Cloud Infrastructure Architecture for Distributed Simulation. Answer: Problem To Be Solved The problem that is to be solved in this research paper is about a cloud infrastructure and then this paper proposes a solution to all the problems that is attributed to a single model that is simulated on particular cloud platform. Cloud computing is basically a model that enables the network access that are on demand for sharing a pool of resources [6]. The service models of cloud are mostly chosen with the type of resource which is taken. The distributed simulation involved with cloud computing helps to study the methodologies and the techniques which are needed for executing simulation models and are also used for defining the simulation models on architectures of distributed computing [2]. A distributed simulation is generally a program software that are used for evolution of models for some of the abstract or real system. To evaluate the systems even before they are built, the process if simulation is used. Simulation also affects the changes that are on the existing systems. T he simulation process mostly uses set of variables. The distributed simulation depends on dividing the simulation model over many execution units. The entire execution unit manages only a single part of model. In simulation process, execution process handles the local event list and also generates events logically that are needed for delivery for executing the remote units [7]. Simulation process allows all processor to control a part of state space and small fraction of events. To integrate the simulators, which are distributed geographically, are done by distributed simulation. Research Hypothesis The hypothesis of this research paper is that by the end of this research paper, different techniques for simulation are expected to be connected and then work together so that they can facilitate the complex and large models that can be run, analyzed in many cloud platforms, and replicated. The hypothesis made in this paper helps to improve the performance, scalability, and execution speed and also reduces the cost of modeling [5]. The contributions that were made while working on this thesis is the deployment of distributed simulation on different cloud infrastructure for the testing on user.III.Contribution Of Research In todays modern digitization era, the computing architectures and the networking systems brings the system of computer parallel to masses, which generally increases the potential number of users for those kinds of system. Cloud computing is a process that allows all the applications to scale the resources that are offered from large pool. The cloud and the multi - core processor systems requires applications that are modified to get an advantage on features that are mainly provided by them. In this technological era, the activities that are included in the business are mainly computerized and to access them from anywhere and at anytime is a way to remain competitive to achieve their business goals. By the process of cloud computing, the workflows of the businesses can be run made smooth, enabling a high performance in their business [4]. The technology of distributed simulations mainly gains the significance mainly in three different communities. The different communities are commun ity of high performance, community of defense and the gaming industry that mainly focuses on time management. The beginning of distributed simulation was in the year 2005. The standards of interoperability were being investigated that were based on format of data exchange and also the protocols for CSPs. There were also use of emulators used for feasibility study and are also used to demonstrate the benefits of the stakeholders when the emulators were adopted. Evaluating The Results Auto-scaling of the cloud infrastructure helps to allow the safe running of the distributed simulation on all the models involved in supply chain and the manufacturing industries with reliability and speed. This paper has stuffs collected from many literature reviews, which describes the PaaS, SaaS and IaaS infrastructure [1]. The methodology that is involved in this research paper is a case study approach. The data that are involved in this research are collected from the assembly line of production. The program fragment of the prototype will be developed and the distributed simulations of test run for various replications are also implied in this research paper. Results Achieved The case study that is highlighted in this research paper is about Henry Ford of Ford Automobile Company who aims to produce high speed cars at lower production cost [3]. The research paper also shows the future aim of the Ford Automobile Company and the steps that are involved with the company for distributed simulation. References D'Angelo, G., 2011. List of Free Online Public Schools for Utah Students

List of Free Online Public Schools for Utah Students Utah offers resident students the opportunity to take online public school courses for free. Below is a list of no-cost online schools currently serving elementary and high school students in Utah. In order to qualify for the list, schools must meet the following qualifications: classes must be available completely online, they must offer services to state residents, and they must be funded by the government. Virtual schools listed may be charter schools, state-wide public programs, or private programs that receive government funding. List of Utah Online Charter Schools and Online Public Schools Utah Electronic High School (off-site link)Utah Virtual Academy (off-site link) About Online Charter Schools and Online Public Schools Many states now offer tuition-free online schools for resident students under a certain age (often 21). Most virtual schools are charter schools; they receive government funding and are run by a private organization. Online charter schools are subject to fewer restrictions than traditional schools. However, they are reviewed regularly and must continue to meet state standards. Some states also offer their own online public schools. These virtual programs generally operate from a state office or a school district. State-wide public school programs vary. Some online public schools offer a limited number of remedial or advanced courses not available in brick-and-mortar public school campuses. Others offer full online diploma programs. A few states choose to fund â€Å"seats† for students in private online schools. The number of available seats may be limited and students are usually asked to apply through their public school guidance counselor. (See also: 4 Types of Online High Schools). Choosing a Utah Online Public School When choosing an online public school, look for an established program that is regionally accredited and has a track record of success. Be wary of new schools that are disorganized, are unaccredited, or have been the subject of public scrutiny. For more suggestions on evaluating virtual schools see: How to Choose an Online High School.

Competitive Structure and Resources of Southwest Airlines Research Paper

Competitive Structure and Resources of Southwest Airlines - Research Paper Example Even though it is common knowledge that Southwest Airlines has a very large share of the market, there are also as many buyers or air transport travelers as possible, who use the serves of other airlines within the market region where Southwest Airlines operate (Mazzeo, 2009). As far as buyer entry barriers are concerned, there are no buyer entry barriers for patrons of air transportation and this gives a very strong indication as to why Southwest Airlines is operating a perfect competition. Even more, regardless of all the successes that has been seen by the airline in its market segment, there continues to be fierce competition among other key competitors with no competitor having a market share of more than 30% (Prince and Simon, 2009). What this means is that market share is low and there are other substitute products in terms of other forms of transportation that consumer may fall on. Macro and international influences on the firm As an international company, the operations of S outhwest Airlines are greatly affected by a number of macro and international factors, of which the company barely has no authority or control over. Whereas some of these macro and international influences are political, some are economical, whiles others are social. As far as political factors are concerned, it is on record that even though the American and Chinese governments have each tried as much as possible to keep taxes on air transport minimal, factors like homeland security, infrastructure enhancement and environmental protection have led to a situation whereby there are huge sums of taxes imposed on the traveling public (Mazzeo, 2009). These taxes are often translated into higher airline tickets, which generally affect the rate at which people choose to travel by air. The table below represents some of the special commercial aviation taxes that are paid in the United States, where Southwest Airline is very dominant. Type of Tax Rate Passenger ticket tax 7.50% Flight Segmen t Tax (Domestic) $3.8 Frequent Flyer Tax 7.5% International Departure Tax $16.7 International Arrival Tax %16.7 September 11th Fee $2.5 Customs User Fee $5.5 Federal Security Sub-charge $2.5 Passenger Facility Charge $4.5 Source: Airlines for America By provisions of the government, these are taxes that are inevitable to the airline and those influences its pricing, promotions and marketing style all together. The economic recession, which has over the years become unpredictable, and growing inflation problems are some macro economic factors that affect the company. What is more, demographics of travelers happens to be a majority macro social factor that influences Southwest Airlines given that air transport is fast becoming the preserve of the elite and that there has to be more of the higher social class emanating from society to get the market really booming. Changes in market structure Over the years, the market structure with which Southwest Airlines competed in has changed sig nificantly. Most of these changes have actually taken place in terms of the availability of skill, labor and raw materials. For instance, with the advancement of technology, which is dominating almost every type of industrial sector in the global economic regime, the use of highly skilled labor force is no longer an optional choice for the

Childhood memories Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Childhood memories - Essay Example The question often arose in my mind: who was holding them in the sky? At times, I used to get a simple answer that God was holding them so that we kids could watch and play with them. When I grew up I moved to a coastal city with my parents. Many small hills were lurking behind on north sides of the town. Fortunately, I got a company of Sarah, who lived in the city since her childhood, and she was well acquainted with the geography of the town. Once she took me to a nearby hill in the early morning hours to show me some rare birds. She told me that she visited this place after her school hours when she was in the 9th form. The hills were full of dense trees all around. The most fascinating thing was that variety of birds had their nests in these trees and the place was full of melodious sounds. She drew my attention to a bird called Yellow-billed Cuckoo. The bird had a typical hollow sound quite soothing to the ears. Sarah took me to a place at least 100 meters up in the hill, where I saw birds that she identified as bluebirds. Bluebirds had white stomachs, rust-colored breasts and bright blue feathers, and they were chirping all in unison. Sarah told me that their numbers were dwindling quickly due to ill doings of humans. At once, a thought came to my mind that with such beautiful species becoming extinct, humans will not be able to enjoy the beauty of nature. When I focused through my binoculars on the nest, I was amazed to see two little bluebird nestlings making noise – perhaps asking for the food from their mother. Mother Bluebird was feeding them with a great effort through her beak. It was indeed a greatest mystery – a mystery of creation in this universe, and I bowed down to Mother Nature with a feeling of awe. I have always been a moderate swimmer – moderate in the sense of not possessing any extra skills that are expected from a good swimmer. Perhaps, that is why I had a close encounter with death when I was at Fort Lauderdale Be ach on my vacation tour. Swimming in my customary style, I had gone a little far off. My friends were swimming at some distance. I was jolly making some movements in the water – perhaps attempting to do some water exercises to remain afloat effortlessly without realizing that my unique exercises would put me in great trouble soon. At some bad moment, my feet were stuck in some marshland. The more I tried to come out, the more immobile I became. I tried to scream but could not as my mouth was filled with water. I was losing my breath and power. I soon realized I was going to drown. But, as luck would have it, for a moment my head came out of water and I screamed loudly. Hearing my call, someone from nearby rushed quickly; he held my hand and pulled me out with full force. In the next moment, I was out of the marshland. The whole episode lasted only for a minute or so but the incident gave me an unforgettable near-death experience that will remain with me until the end of my li fe. Its memories still hound me. The most significant part of the episode was that I realized a true meaning of life – the life that encompasses a myriad of species on this planet. Sarah’s cousin, Sierra, was a most passionate dancer. When I saw her in one of her performances, I was amazed at the way she effortlessly performed a Swirling Sufi dance. I found her totally engrossed in the Dervish dance. Sierra told me about Nijinsky, an outstanding and the most cherished Russian dancer. When Nijinsky used to perform, one would feel as if he was out of bounds of gravitation. He would make a leap and fall as if a leaf was coming down slowly and slowly. Sierra would say, â€Å"Watching a dance is a good thing but performing it is a much deeper experience†

Mice and Men Essay Example for Free

Mice and Men Essay John Ernst Steinbeck was born on 27 February 1902, in Salinas, California, USA. The Salinas River is mentioned in the first line of Of Mice and Men. The whole novel is centred on the landscape around Salinas. Steinbeck was the third of four children, of mixed German and Irish descent. His parents owned a considerable amount of land, and his mother was a schoolteacher who encouraged him to read widely. His background was neither rich nor poor, and his parents wanted him to follow a respectable career. John Steinbeck wrote the novel called Of Mice and Men. It was published in the depression years of the 1930s. Steinbeck raises questions in the mind of the reader that the novel would be based on loneliness. The first line read A few miles south of Soledad. This is a clever idea by Steinbeck as Soledad means loneliness in Spanish. John Steinbecks family was wealthy, but was interested in the lives of farm labourers. It gave him a inspiration to write books about migrant workers. He could of been a doctor or a teacher but he chose to become an author. John Steinbeck must of met a lot of people like Lennie and George, so he has ideas to write a good book. The historical context of the novel is that its all about the depression years in the 1930s. It was illegal to be unemployed. People living in the 30s didnt have a choice but to go to work. The main characters in this story are George and Lennie. They travel around together, share their minds together, and what ever trouble Lennie gets into, George had to get him out of it. George didnt like Lennie that much because of all the trouble that he gets into. He didnt want to stay with Lennie, but his mother told George to look after him. Lennie was always trying to find a good opportunity to go off alone in the hills. George didnt want that, he liked Lennie as a friend, but Lennie gets into too much trouble. But they always say; You got me, and I got you. This novel called Of Mice and Men was set in a town called Soledad. It meant Lonely in Spanish. The ranch is located in the middle of no where. Its 4 miles to the town. The characters in this novel are ranch workers who are described as lonely. Ranch work is not long term. All of the workers except for Candy and Crooks are only passing through. When George and Lennie get jobs, the boss is suspicious of them because they look like theyve known each other from somewhere and are close friends. The other ranch workers see that George is always answering for Lennie. But they cannot understand why they are always together. George says that ranch workers are the loneliest people in the world and dont belong nowhere. In this paragraph, Im going to write about Crooks. Crooks is a black guy. Hes not allowed to stay in the bunkhouse with the other ranch hands because he is black. He doesnt have the same status as the other white workers. Crooks was also excluded because he suffered an injury and so is not as capable as the other ranch hands. His possessions show that he is lonely. Everyone can see that because he loves to read his books but was excluded. Crooks doesnt like when Lennie tries to talk to him. Crooks get angry every time he tells Lennie to go away from him. But after that, he admits that he is lonely. Lennie will also get lonely and even sick when no one is with him. He needs someone beside him all the time so that he feels supported. For this, he always wants George. In this paragraph, I have looked at the way Crooks treat other people and what his appearance looks like to everyone else. I will now write about Candy. Hes an old man who wants to join up with George and Lennie and get a place where they can live. Candy provides a parallel to George and Lennie in that he relies on his dog Im so used to im (p.46) just as George and Lennie are an elevated version of a master/dog relationship. Candy clings to his dog, despite all that logic and common sense dictate. He loves to be with his dog because he had him since he was a puppy. It was the best sheepdog he had ever had. The other workers didnt realise the relationship between Candy and the dog. It meant nothing to everyone except for Candy. Theyve been together for all of Candys life. But now Lennies life has ended. Candy cleans out the farm buildings, and shows George and Lennie the bunkhouse. Candy lost his hand whilst working on the farm, and was allowed to stay on in this lowly position as cleaner. Candy soon asks George and Lennie if he can come in with them. George said We werent thinking of a third person. Cause we was gonna do it on our own. George knew that it was owned by old people who might be willing to sell it for $600 or so. Candy confesses he has $350 saved up and asks if he can come in with them. George really begins to believe that his dream might become a reality. He needs to work for another month or two and not spend anything so that they will have the stake to buy the farm. This will be good for Candy because then he can live a happy life and avoid the loneliness in the life of a ranch worker. Hes worked here for so long and wants to change his miserable life and make it peaceful. Candy was moaning that he just let a stranger shoot his dog. By the look of him, he could see that Carlson didnt like the smell of Candys old dog. Carlson asks Slim to give Candy one of the other pups so that the old dog can be shot. Once the dog has been shot, he feels strong pressure because he had him since he was a pup. When George and Lennie were talking about their dream, Candy steps in and instead of being sad, George and Lennie gives pride and gives Candy more confidence. In this paragraph I have explained Candys life and the way he lives. I am now going to write about Curleys wife. She doesnt like Curley very much and wants to go elsewhere but cannot because of Curley. The other ranch workers avoid Curleys wife as they know that if they befriend her, they will get into trouble. She also said that she could hang Curley at anytime if she felt like it (Showing that she can be dangerous as well as Lennie). She also visits the bunkhouse a lot, she wanted company, but had to ask where Curley was. On Saturday nights she is left at the ranch alone. When she is left alone at the ranch, she tells everyone about her life and story. Its very miserable for Curleys wife. She tells everyone the truth that she doesnt really like Curley. Everyone else has names except for her. She has to be called Curleys wife. That is why she doesnt appear much in the story. Shes being treated like an object. Slims dog name is Loulou. We have looked at the character of Curleys wife and how she got on. George and Lennie are different to the other ranch hands. The way they respond to each other shows very close friendship. Lennie always get into trouble and George is there to get him out of it. They share a dream together of working and then getting a lot of money so that they can live comfortably in the place that there going to get. Every time George says Were gonna get the place. Lennie gets very excited and says I get to tend the rabbits. But when George is about to shoot Lennie, he keeps saying this so that Lennie puts his mind fully onto the house in his head and imagining him tend the rabbits, George wanted this because when he looked the other way, there was a time to shoot him. George wanted him to see it as he is talking. It was related to the shooting of Candys dog too which gave George more confidence in shooting Lennie. But at the end, it is George who will feel guilty. George often insults Lennie and gives him hell, but he doesnt really mean it. Although he often talks about how well off he could be without Lennie he secretly doesnt want Lennie to leave, and when Lennie offers to do so in the first chapter, George virtually pleads with him to stay. This is because George also depends on Lennie to a certain extent for his unconditional friendship. I didnt think that Steinbeck would make George shoot Lennie. At first, those two was good friends, I thought they would actually get that bunkhouse. But it ended in a bad way. It made the readers / watchers feel shocked and feel that his life has ended with just one shot. George always gets annoyed of Lennie and Lennie says that he will go up to the hills. George knows that hes the only one who has to get him out of trouble. But then decides if Lennies gone, then he can have total freedom and do anything he wants. At the end, it might of been a mistake to shoot Lennie. The first paragraph tells us about the introduction of John Steinbeck. It tells the readers what is going to happen. The second paragraph describes the setting and ranch workers. Its the setting of the story and the ranch workers. The third paragraph lets the readers understand Crooks. It also describes his ethnic group and his rights. The fourth paragraph tells us about Candy. It tells the readers about his loving dog and his dreams towards the ranch. The fifth paragraph also describes Curleys Wife. The way she acts in the story, and how lonely she is. Finally, the last paragraph tells the readers about the friendship of George and Lennie. It tells us how George and Lennie travel together, live together and the trouble that they get into. It also summarises George and Lennies dream. John Steinbeck is trying to say that life in the 1930s in California was lonely. He doesnt just write it down, because that will just give the point away. He wants the readers to imagine it for themselves.

The Dignity of Law Essays -- Law College Admissions Essays

"The business of the law is to make sense of the confusion of what we call human life-to reduce it to order but at the same time to give it possibility, scope, even dignity." In 1972, the American poet Archibald MacLeish wrote these words in the Harvard Law Review. In 1997, I read these words. At that point, the challenge and lure of the law crystallized before me, and I now see the ideals of MacLeish's vision as my own. MacLeish envisions the law as providing a sense of possibility, or hope, and I identify with this. Coming from a financially disadvantaged childhood, I had to put forth serious effort in overcoming financial and personal adversity and focusing on the importance of family and education. Without a sense of the unlimited possibilities ahead of me, my goals would never have been taken seriously-by myself or by others-and I would not have followed them to completion. Through my sense of possibility, I took my place on the Honor Rolls for fall 1996 and 1997 at the University of Maryland at Baltimore. I also served as vice president for...

IB Math Exploration

Although the aluminum can and the wood chip were ere close together, there was still a large amount of heat loss to the surroundings. This resulted in a lower temperature reading, which in turn reduced our AT value. Thus reducing our overall enthalpy of combustion and is one of the reasons why the theoretical value does not fall within our experimental range. A way we could possibly reduce this error is to alter the apparatus and let as little air escape as possible which would keep energy losses to a minimum while maintaining a stable environment for the wood chip to combustion.Ideally we could have the apparatus inside a glass chamber with a hole for the temperature probe and a hole to light the Another source of error we must take into a count was the improper use of the temperature probe. Instead of letting the probe sit freely in the aluminum can producing an accurate measurement; we let the probe sink to the bottom of the can where it would record a higher temperature due to th e hot spot in the water. This has an impact on our experimental value and would be a reason why our experimental value is higher than the theoretical one. This is not the case due to the act that heat loss reduces the amount of energy gained by a substantial amount compared to how much is gained from a rise in temperature. We could have simply eliminated this error by keeping the probe suspended in the water and giving it a stir every once in a while in order to reach uniform temperature in the can. A couple of minor errors I noticed were the fact that we used a graduated cylinder to measure our amount of water. Then we poured that water into our aluminum can but we weren't able to pour every ounce of water out of the cylinder. Thus affecting our mass in our mica formula for water and having an overall negative affect on our enthalpy value. Another minor thing was that as I noted in my qualitative data I incomplete combustion since soot (or otherwise known as impure carbon particles) is one of the products from that reaction. In this type of reaction less energy is released, thus dropping our enthalpy of combustion value to even further below our theoretical value. In order to fix these minor errors we can fill our can directly from the tap as well as have a greater supply of clean oxygen for the reaction to occur.

International Governance Problem, Terrorism, the Role of the US in the International System Free Essay Example, 1000 words

Terrorism may be defined as a form of warfare that involves the spread of terror in the minds of the civilian population of the enemy as a weapon. This is a popular form of warfare in many parts of the world and is mostly employed by weaker countries and groups against stronger ones. Terrorists have often justified their actions using a variety of reasons. These involve liberty for a certain group, religion, an oppressive regime and so on and so forth. The variety of reasons that are laid out can be seen as proof of the spread of the phenomenon. These reasons may not always be real; however, they succeed in attracting people, especially youth, to the cause. The reasons are in most cases, a fa ade to delude youth into joining these movements. This may also prove to be counterproductive. A combination of force and efforts to improve the quality of living in areas where youth are recruited to become terrorists would produce the best results and also build confidence among the suffering civilian population. Question # 4: What are NGO s? Are they important to the international global community? What is soft power and how do they rely on soft power to their benefit? NGOs (Non-governmental Organizations) are organizations that mostly work with funding from donations from people who are interested in the causes that these organizations support. These organizations are mostly involved in activities that seek to make the society a better place to live in. They mostly have an ideology or a cause which they fight for actively. Climate change, animal welfare and awareness regarding certain diseases are among many, the causes that are actively advocated by NGOs around the world. The visibility that these causes receive in the public depends to a great extent, on the work that is done by these organizations and thus is important to the international global community since the issues that these organizations work for are those that need to be highlighted for the benefit of the international community.

A careful eye most be used when examining the claims as several, even though backed by university research, have shocking claims, which may be estimated due to experimental flaws. An example of one such flaw is the claim that NO Shotgun increased maximal weight in the Bench Press and Leg Press, being 1067% and 55% respectfully 4. This may be true for the test groups, but most people buying VPX will not be untrained individuals such as the ones used in that study 4. For the uninformed this will make NO Shotgun, as well as any other product with similar claims due to experimental error, to possibly crisis the product for not having as profound of effect on them when used. How Can A Focus On Gender Enrich Our Understanding Of...

How can a focus on gender enrich our understanding of contemporary media? Gender is a social construct—that is, a society s assumptions about the way a man or woman should look and behave. It is argued that the media plays a big role in the way that gender is created and is influenced over society. The Mass media plays a significant role in a modern world, by broadcasting information in fast pace and giving entertainment to vast audiences. This essay is going to assess whether a focus on gender can enrich our understanding of contemporary media, by analysing gender roles within the television show Sex in the City. Airwide International free essay sample

Airwide International, a company that specializes in the production and selling of air conditioning units in Europe and Asia, experienced some tough times in the China division. To keep things simple, the China division was losing customers to competitiors and experienced a dismal 2% growth in one quarter. The divisions main problem was that they were not in tune with the wants and needs of their customers. Airwide had been relying on their old methods of selling and their relationships with their clients in order to sell their product. The downside to this, which the China division experienced first hand, is that when the buyers change their methods or values, the sellers are forced to compensate if they wish to stay competitive. For example, one of the sales engineers for Airwide had shared a story with Mr. Wei (sales manager of the China division) that a long time customer of Airwide had switched to a competitors product when a new manager of the buyer was in control. We will write a custom essay sample on Airwide International or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The old sale was always made because of the strong relationship between Airwide International and the manager of the buying company. When that manager left, so did the relationship and eventually the contracts. A final lesson that can be taken away from this case is the idea that a customer  is no longer just one person, but is moving in the direction of the whole company making a democratic decision. Executives of buying companies are still making decisions on certain products but it is also true that the process is becoming more democratic. The case describes this situation   by seeing the customer as a â€Å"school of fish†. They are all traveling in the same direction but it is a collective group, not just one individual. Sales people must therefore tailor their selling strategies to persuade a multitude of people and not just one person. Key Issues/Suggested Solutions * Communication Between Customers- In business, communication is essential if a company is to succeed. Being able to communicate and persuade someone with your words and actions defines a person as either successful or unsuccessful. Airwide International failed to communicate with their customers about their products and eventually lost contracts as a result. * Communication Between Sales People – When the extra training for the sales people did not help solve the profit problem, Mr. Wei could have been more effective if he had polled the sales people and specifically asked them what the issue was. He did do this with one of his sales people but a broader spectrum of sales people is needed in order to figure out the whole issue. Tiredness of Salespeople – Increasing the amount of work that a company asks a sales person to accomplish is obviously going to make them increasingly more tired as the day progresses. When Mr. Wei added incentives for the sales people that did particularly well according to his standards, he was doing the right thing in order to motivate his employees, even though it ended up a failure in the end. There comes a point where the amount of work just outweighs any incentive to do well. This is simply human nature. A  solution to  this is hiring more sales people so that their is less burden on each individual sales person. * Disinterest in Sales Tactics- From interpretation of the Airwide International case, it appears that the customers became disinterested in the products that Airwide International was producing or the sales people simply could no longer sell the products effectively. Airwide was losing contracts with customers when the competitor sold the same exact product at  a more expensive price. This typically does not happen unless the competitor has a better customer value proposition. If this is in fact the case, Airwide should change change their tactics competely and managers and executives must find a customer value proposition that is more effective than the competitors. Buyers Viewpoint: As a previous customer of Airwide International who has just switched to a competitors product, I would view the tactics of the Airwide International sales people as prehistoric in nature. Airwide did not offer any new additions to their product that would make it more enticing than what we already have. The world is constantly changing, and so businesses that buy air conditioning products are going to want the most innovative product that is out there on the market. As a CEO, and im sure many other CEO’s have the same viewpoint, we don’t mind paying a little bit extra if the extra money is going to a more innovative and specifically designed product. The product line for Airwide is so simple and generic that it does not interest us. We would rather pay extra to get a product that is â€Å"new† and does more for our company than any old fashioned air conditoner could do. Seller’s Viewpoint: As a Airwide International Salesman, I do not understand why companies are not taking our air conditioners over our competitors. We offer many different kinds of air conditioning units that can be used in any sort of house or business. WE have been around for so long that we must be doing something right. We are even able to offer our customers the cheapest units out there on the market yet we are still losing deals to our competitors. It is starting to become sad that we cannot even satisfy our long time customers anymore.

Womens Suffrage Movement Essay Example

Womens Suffrage Movement Essay For the past few decades the goal of feminism has been to achieve equal rights for women. It began with the efforts of Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton who laid the frame for the Womens Suffrage Movement and later movements to come. They set out to clear the board of patriarchal domination. Since women were not permitted to attend the World Anti-Slavery convention, Mott and Stanton organized the first womens rights convention, Seneca Falls, in 1848 (56). It is this key event, which marks the initial effort toward achieving equal rights for women. Equal status for women was thought to be against the will of God during the nineteenth century. This accounts for the small fraction of women writers recognized during this era. Of this number, a young woman by the name of Emily Elizabeth Dickinson is considered to be the most distinguished. Emily Dickinsons, She Rose to His Requirements, provides a window into the way nineteenth century culture constructed and understood concepts such as gender, marriage and sexual personae. The majority of Dickinsons poetry is based on death, love and eternity. Based on the context of the poem, She Rose to His Requirements, we will examine the cultural attitudes toward gender, marriage and sexual personae, which exist in the nineteenth century. In comparing these attitudes to those, which exist in the twenty-first century we will determine whether or not equal rights for women is truly a reality. One should take into consideration, Betty Friedans term, the feminine mystique. This term is in reference to traditional female roles. In Dickinsons poem, She Rose to His Requirement, the idea of the feminine mystique is present. She rose to his requirement__dropt The playthings of her life To take the honorable work Of woman, and of wife (1-5) Line two of this stanza brings up an aspect of patriarchal domination. The word playthings may refer to the age of the female in the poem and suggests that the female is of adolescence. Line four of this stanza supports this factor in that the poet uses woman versus wife to indicate that the young girl has not yet reached maturity. Another possible interpretation of the use of the word playthings is that the young woman may unwillingly be sacrificing her goals, aspirations, or dreams to play the expected role of a woman of this era. During this period in time it is very common for a female to be married at a very young age, in order to secure her familys wealth or to strengthen her family name. However, this poses a problem: the loss of innocence and identity due to conformity and constraint. Naomi Wolfs, usage of the metaphorical term, Iron Maiden Imagery, supports the existence of this phenomenon (51). Before the term can be understood metaphorically, one must understand its initial meaning. Initially, the Iron Maiden was a term used to describe a type of torture or punishment inflicted upon women of mid-evil times. This torture entailed a women being enclosed in a wooden box, which was internally embedded with metal spikes. As the box was closed, entrapping the female, the metal spikes would puncture the flesh and she would bleed to death. Metaphorically, the Iron Maiden describes the entrapment of a woman in her own body. Perhaps Emily Dickinsons purpose for writing poetry such as this is to escape the constraining roles of women of the nineteenth century. Because outlets for feminine expression are few, this may be a form of passive expression in which Dickinson rebels against patriarchal domination. An example of this passive rebellion arises in stanza two. If ought she missed in her new day, Of amplitude, or awe__ Or first prospective__ or the gold In using, wear away (6-9) Here Dickinson mocks the presence of euphoria on the young girls wedding day. By using the words amplitude, awe, and prospective, the poet applies negative connotation to what is supposed to be the happiest day in a womans life. This may suggest that Dickinson holds a negative view of marriage Many of Emily Dickinsons poems are characterized by the intricate use of metaphors. She uses metaphors more literally than anyone else in major literature (Paglia 637). An example surfaces in stanza three. It lay unmentioned__as the sea Develope pearl and weed, But only to himself__be known The fathoms they abide__ (11-14) In this stanza, it refers to the gold wedding ring in stanza two which, as implied by the poet, will no longer be in use later in the marriage. The sea image used by the poet is appropriate because it is in reference to the word wear (stanza two) which means to cause a ship to turn about with the stern facing the wind. A fathom is a unit of about six feet, which is used to measure the depth of water. By using such words, Dickinson has painted a vivid picture of what the marriage will be like in the future, thus her use of literal metaphors. Because of Dickinsons literal use of metaphors in the poem, we can accurately compare the attitudes toward gender, marriage and sexual personae, which are present in the nineteenth century to those, which are present in the twenty-first century. It appears that in the nineteenth century these attitudes were strongly governed by patriarchal domination. The only purpose women were to serve was that of the wife and child bearer. A woman deemed out spoken was shunned and could never expect to be married if she carried herself in this manner. The irony in the poem arises in the title. The title suggests a step up while the poem itself suggests submissiveness and inferiority. The context of the poem implies that sublimation in women can only occur once she is married. In the twenty-first century, women are bound by beauty, for it has come to exist within society as a commodity, a product, which can be bought and sold. Women are bound by the concept of beauty, for it applies mainly to physical appearance and excludes the beauty of personality and character. Liberal women are often shunned as in the nineteenth century and the idea that men are superior to women has not ceased to exist either. For example, gender discrimination is evident when taking into consideration the stipends of male and female employees who work for the same company, perform the same tasks, and answer to the same boss. The male employee often receives a significantly higher stipend than that of the female employee. Where is the equity in this? The existence of equal rights for women may exist only in spirit, thus it can be referred to as a ghost theory. Equality between genders does not exist. It, along with the concepts of racism and miscegenation, is beyond societys reach. Perhaps the male gender is afraid of what will transpire as a result. Gender equality is feared and remains an unseen aspect of societal development, thus the term ghost theory.

Support For A Dna Data Bank Essays - DNA, Molecular Biology

support for a dna data bank A DNA Bank Is Good For All Imagine that a convicted child molester is released from jail and that he is now traveling around the country looking for work. One day this criminal returns to his old ways and he attacks a young child whose dead body is found in a deserted field the following day. The only trace of evidence at the crime scene is a semen specimen on the boys clothes. Now this specimen could be useful if the police tracked down, and arrested the suspect, and then took a blood sample of his that matched the crime scene specimen. But, since no other clues are found this criminal was never arrested and for the next couple years he repeated this act many more times. It is a shame that innocent children had to die because of this sick man, and most people would agree criminals like this should be stopped at any cost. Now just think what would have happened had their been a DNA data bank that contained this man To understand why a DNA data bank is necessary it is important to know exactly what DNA is. Firstly, there are cells which makes up all organisms and inside these cells are chromosomes. Chromosomes, which are made up of DNA, contain all the hereditary information that an individual has. Now this DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) which makes up these chromosomes simply contains the blueprints of the organism. It is DNA which determines what, where, and when to make a certain protein, and it basically is the storage center for information in almost all creatures. This knowledge of DNA is important because now it is possible to show the correlation between DNA and forensic technology. There are many reasons why DNA is such a useful tool for law enforcement. One important feature of DNA, relates to the fact that all individuals have unique DNA, is that each cell in an organism has identical DNA. Whether it is found in in skin cells, hair cells, semen cells, or blood cells the DNA found in one cell is identical to the DNA found in all other cells in the body Another extremely crucial characteristic of DNA is that everyone has their own unique DNA. Since humans in general are basically alike in that we all have legs, arms, hearts brain it is obvious that most DNA is identical. The key though to identifying individuals through DNA is not through the strands of DNA that have a known function, rather it is the DNA that has no known function. Inside these strands of DNA with no known function, called Junk DNA, are different repetitive DNA patterns which are unique from person to person. This is why DNA can always, be traced back to one person (with the exception of identical twins). There are two tests for analyzing DNA for forensic use, Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP), and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The RFLP test consists of taking a sample of body tissue which contains DNA. After locating the DNA thousands of different combinations of DNA repeats called Variable Number of Tandem Repeats (VNTR) are examined. These VNTR There are a great number of reasons to have a DNA data bank, but first it is important to accurately describe the requirements for this DNA data bank. Only convicted criminals would be entered into the bank. Also, only Junk DNA would be kept as data, DNA that contains no personal or hereditary information. One advantage to a data bank will be the quick access to information. Prosecutors are going to be able to match the DNA collected at a crime scene with DNA that has already been collected in the bank and this will allow them to apply for a warrant faster. Take the case of Jean Ann Broderick. In 1991 she was found murdered and raped in her Minnesota apartment. There were no witnesses or evidence that led to any one suspect. The only lead at the crime scene was a semen stain on the victim. Minnesota at this time was one of the few states that had and used a DNA data bank of convicted criminals, so the Minnesota authorities checked their sample DNA with the DNA data bank and found a match that linked the DNA with Martin Perez, a 37 year old illegal alien. After Perez was identified by the DNA, he was also identified by witnesses, who saw him at Jean Ann BroderickAnother advantage of having a DNA data bank is that it
